CONVENIENT MYTHS
the green revolution —
perceptions, politics, and facts

book cover

by Klaus L.E. Kaiser, is the first clearly written, comprehensive book looking at the green desires and expectations and juxtaposing these with the physical and chemical facts and realities.

CONVENIENT MYTHS explains in common terms why many of these green ideas will remain myths and dreams. The laws of nature cannot be broken. No matter how much we may desire the opposite.

Book Excerpts

Laws of Physics

There are some simple laws of physics. They do not require any knowledge of high-level mathematics or other difficult fields of science. Despite their simplicity and universality, there is a never-ending stream of patent applications and "inventions" claiming to get around the most simple of these laws of physics. Such claims relate to what is commonly termed the "Perpetuum mobile."

The Perpetuum mobile (a Latin term meaning "perpetual motion machine") has been in pursuit for centuries if not millennia. Patent offices around the world, and other enterprises looking for new ideas and inventions to support, receive a steady stream of inventors' claims for such. Some of these ideas actually receive patent status, even in the 21st century, only to be never heard of again. One example is US patent 6,362,718, awarded in 2002. The figure below shows another example, dating back to the 13th century.

The Perpetuum mobile is a myth. Mother Nature, also known as Laws of Physics, does not allow a Perpetuum mobile to exist. The reasons are not difficult to understand. One is that energy cannot be created out of nothing. The other is that there is always some friction resulting in a loss of momentum, energy that is converted to heat. Therefore, a perpetual motion machine said to require no further energy input once started, is pure fantasy. Even more so, of course, is a Perpetuum mobile device supposed to deliver any energy.

For example, even the rotation of the earth around its axis, once every 24 hours, is not constant. Every few years, the clocks have to be adjusted by adding a second or so to "keep up" with the slowing revolution of the planet. This slowing is caused by a minute but steady deformation of the earth's shape from the sun's and moon's gravitational fields. The energy required for that deformation is taken from the rotational momentum of the earth, resulting in a slow but steady lowering of the rotational speed.

Energy cannot be created out of nothing, nor can it simply disappear. Energy can only be obtained by conversion from another source or material and can only be converted to another form of energy (of which heat is the most prevalent one)....
